Waterhole Aboriginal Art came into being in January, 2004 as a collaboration between three highly experienced partners, John Morse AM, Jenny Hillman and Suzie Spira. Jenny and Suzie have been involved in the successful promotion of Australian artists for some years, placing paintings in many private and corporate Australian collections. Jenny and Suzie have a strong and ongoing connection to many Aboriginal painters and their communities, visiting with them, and helping them in their journeys to Sydney.
The aim of Waterhole Aboriginal Art is 'to provide customers with quality art while ensuring that the Aboriginal artists are well paid for their art'. Further to this, a proportion of Waterhole's profits will be directed to the Indigenous communities to help individuals in need of assistance.
As Waterhole grows, so will the number of projects supported. We organise regular group and solo shows for our artists and place artwork in corporate fitouts. In June 2004, Waterhole was selected to hold the opening exhibition at the relaunch of the Sofitel Wentworth Hotel, Sydney. The exhibition launched Kudditji Kngwarreye’s work in Sydney and was opened by Edmund Capon A.O.
For the last three years Jenny Hillman and Suzie Spira, the directors of Waterhole Art have curated exhibitions to support The Indigenous Scholarship Fund which enables Indigenous students to study at University in medical and allied health studies. Communities have been approached and consigned work to support this cause. Currently eighteen students are being assisted under this scheme. The exhibitions, Shalom Gamarada at the UNSW and APS Bendilango at Rio Tinto in Melbourne have met with great community support and the sales have funded scholarships. Our work will continue in this endeavour.
