Mary Place opened as a gallery in January 1980, and is now recognised as a venue for varied and quality exhibitions. It is within walking distance of the well known commercial galleries and is part of the Paddington art walk.
Exhibitions are of contemporary art and sculpture, photography, avant garde design and architecture.
The building is a unique converted warehouse, built early this century for a builder. Its varied uses till 1980 included artists studios, foundary and commercial photography workshops.
Mary Place Gallery consists of two large spaces of approximately 100m2. The ground floor space is accessed from Mary Place through tall glass doors, and has polished concrete floors, exposed timber beams across the width of the ceiling, giving an industrial feeling. The first floor gallery has limed timber floors, timber beams, and a delicate spacious atmosphere. The spaces are linked by a stair from the side hallway.
Both spaces are equipped with spotlights on tracks, and a track hanging system of clear plastic lines with adjustable hooks. The gallery has back to base security and barred windows and doors.
The side walls slightly taper towards the rear, allowing the artwork to make positive impact as one enters each space.
Amenities are on both levels. The ground floor has a sink, bar frig and glass storage. The first floor has a curtained space at the rear to accomodate limited storage and 40 folding chairs for lectures/audio visual accompaniments.
Fax facilities, duplicating, email are available on request.
The gallery is directed by architect, Julius Bokor - 0419 258 432
