The Holmes à Court Gallery opened on 4th February 2000, presenting rarely seen early colonial works from The Holmes à Court Collection in our inaugural exhibition, Exploration and Transformation. The Gallery is a long held dream of Heytesbury Chairman, Janet Holmes à Court.

A purpose designed space to present focused exhibitions that examine the diversity and strengths of The Holmes à Court Collection. Our changing programme includes events of national and international interest, developed through cultural, academic and business relationships.

The Holmes à Court Collection, started in the early 1970s, grew from the family's interest in Australian and Indigenous art. It has steadily developed over time into an internationally renowned collection that documents many areas of Australian cultural significance.

Today the Collection consists more than 4000 registered artworks and continues to be an important collection of Australian and Western Australian art with a strong emphasis on Indigenous works.

This background has provided the focus for what is an eclectic and very personal collection. A core philosophy has been to look at artists and their works in terms of the connections and relationships that can be formed when developing exhibitions, rather than a chronological or historical recording of Australian art history. This is after all the role of art museums.
