Specialising in Contemporary Aboriginal Fine Art & Artifacts sourced directly from the artists and their communities in the central and western desert, Gannon House has been operating since the early 1990’s. Many collectable paintings are available.

The Gallery
Since the early eighties the owners of the Gallery have had a very strong interest in the promotion of the arts in Australia and in particular aboriginal art and artefacts. Their interest has led to the development of a large personal collection of art and artefacts from Arnhem Land, and the central and western desert regions.

Over the past eight years their passion and knowledge of Australian art has culminated with the collection at Gannon House Gallery. All art work is acquired directly from the artist or community and includes fine art and craft by contemporary artists from all over Australia. A long and close relationship between the artists and the Gallery enables Gannon House to display the very best selection and quality of work.

The wonderful display of art and crafts housed in the historic surrounds of Michael Gannon's building never fails to impress.

The Building
Michael Gannon (c. 1798-1881) built No. 45 and 47 Argyle Street around 1840. He and his large family lived in No. 45, and the next door carried on his various businesses, including building, auctioning, and coffin making/undertaking. He was also the licensee of the New York Hotel on the George Street corner, where the Police Station now stands. His brother-in-law, John Jenkins Peacock (elected Councillor for Gipps Ward on the first Sydney Council in 1842) rented this shop for a while to sell produce from his Hawkesbury property. Michael Gannon, a carpenter by trade, had been transported for life from Mullingar, County Westmeath, Ireland, for highway robbery. He arrived in Sydney on the convict ship Almorah on 22 December 1820 with his brother James, a cabinet maker, transported for possession of forged notes.

Michael had married Mary Parsonage, whose parents were also convicts, in 1824. Although he did not obtain his ticket of leave until 1829 and his pardon until 1840, Governor Darling agreed to allow Mary to have her husband assigned to her. So, after his marriage, he lived virtually as a free man, and with his colourful personality and obvious skills he soon flourished as developer-builder and auctioneer.

In 1845, he was declared insolvent, one of the many victims of the severe recession which had followed the 1830's land boom, and had to leave his Argyle Street residence. He took his wife and nine surviving children to the picturesque settlement of Tempe on Cook's River, where he had a farm and had recently built Gannon's Inn. He continued to deal in land, notably the purchase in 1850 of a vast forest, the present Hurstville Bexley area. The road running through
