Brigitte Braun established Artplace in January in 1992. Her objective was to discover new talent, to show Aboriginal Art side-by-side with non-Aboriginal Art and to promote Western Australian Art in the Eastern States of Australia and internationally
The first location for Artplace was a 300 sqm, three level space in a former cinema in the historic Old Theatre Lane, in the riverside suburb of Claremont.
In February 2002 Artplace moved to a purpose-built gallery, designed by award-winning architect David Hillam, at 24 Church Street Perth.
Artplace quickly established a reputation for discovering some of the best new Western Australian artists, such as Julie Dowling, Janangoo Butcher Cherel and Mulgra Jimmy Nerrimah. Many of them, John Cullinane, Peter Hill, Hughie Bent, Willy Billabong, Tiny McCale and the artists of the Irrunytju community, had their very first solo exhibitions at Artplace.
Brigitte Braun is highly respected in the art world for her total commitment to proper business dealings and her passion for her artists. She was a member of the board of the Art Gallery of Western Australia from 1995 to 2003, the Art Gallery of WA Foundation from 1997-2000 and served on several advisory boards.
Brigitte Braun regularly showed her artists in the Eastern States, starting with The Advantage of Isolation, a show of 53 WA artists at the Blaxland Gallery in Sydney, in February 1993. Smaller group and solo shows in Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne followed. Artplace has attended every Melbourne Art Fair since 1994. From 1998 onwards Artplace held regular exhibitions in Melbourne and at Galerie Gaswerk in Schwabach, Germany. From 2000-2004, Galerie Gaswerk annually provided a three-months Artist in Residency, followed by a solo exhibition, to an Artplace artist.
After almost 15 successful years in Perth, having built a solid group of dedicated Perth collectors and a growing number of Eastern States and international collectors, Brigitte Braun decided to move to Melbourne and represent her WA artists from there.
Stock and Dealing Room shows can be viewed by appointment at 15 Atkinson Close Windsor VIC 3181.
