Martumili Artists, Australia’s newest art centre is open for business.

After extensive community planning and consultations among the Martu communities of the East Pilbara, Martumili Artists is now taking the creativity and cultural expression of Martu artists to the world.

Martumili Artists works with Martu artists and craftspeople in Newman/Parnpajinya, Nullagine, Punmu, Kunawarritji, Parrngurr and Jigalong.

While there has been a range of arts development and training in these communities, it is the first time the Martu people have had a locally-owned and managed arts enterprise.

Martumili Artists is administered by the Shire of East Pilbara in Newman and is supported by AED, BHP Billiton, the Department of Communication, IT and the Arts and the Pilbara Development Commission.

Established on the same model as other high profile and successful remote-area arts enterprises, Martumili Artists offers a full range of professional and artistic development, training and employment and commercial opportunities to Martu people.

Martumili Artists develops young and emerging artists while also growing the careers of established artists. Simultaneously, Martumili Artists works closely with each community to maximise the opportunities for training and employment. For example, Martumili Artists is supporting the establishment of a studio space in the communities.

The first artworks from the Martu artists are now being sold by the art centre, while an exhibitions program for the region and nationally are being secured. Martumili Artists sells works online at www.martumili.com.au and through the Martumili office on: 9176 8000 or email: martumili@eastpilbara.wa.gov.au.
