A large selection of Lin Onus experimental collaborative prints will be exhibited for the first time in Sydney, at Coo-ee Gallery from 8 May - 7 June. Pioneer of the urban Aboriginal Art Movement in Australia, Lin Onus created work which was not only essentially Australian melding influences from his uniquely indigenous and European background, but showed with enormous wit and creativity what it is like to be an Aboriginal Australian living in a city.
Coo-ee gallery is very pleased to be showcasing the remarkable work of Lin Onus who was one of the most successful, highly sought after and accessible Indigenous artists of his generation. A strong narrative, incisive wit and a deeply felt need for Indigenous reconciliation underpinned his work. It is an occasion to celebrate him not only an artist, but as an inspirational educator, activist and administrator.
The prints in this exhibition are all collaborative initiatives, some executed during Lin Onus's life time and others are where projects left incomplete by his untimely death and continued by artist friend Shaike Snir, Master Printer at Port Jackson Press, and Lin's son Tiriki Onus, with whom he had worked very closely on these same works.
In conjunction with this exhibition Coo-ee Gallery will also be showing the SBS Television film, Lin Onus - Bridge Between Cultures, produced and directed by Mika Nishimura in 1998.
To be opened by : Tiriki Onus
