The Australian Indigenous Art Trade Association is the national organisation for persons and organisations experienced in the business of indigenous art. The organisation operates to promote the ethical trade of indigenous art and to provide a forum where members can discuss issues relevant to the industry.

The Association had its genesis in Alice Springs in 1998 in the coming together of representatives from many different industry groups from all around Australia, community art centres, Indigenous artists, art dealers, galleries, advocacy groups and academics with a view to establishing a framework to build a truly national organisation.

It was felt by many within the Industry that with the growth of Indigenous art both nationally and internationally, the establishment of an Industry Code of Ethics and an Industry Body was long overdue. After several days of debate and discussion from all sectors, a Code of Ethics was hammered out and the Art Trade Association was established in November 1998.

Art.Trade recognises above all that the industry depends upon the creative genius of Indigenous artists producing cultural material and that the long term viability of the industry depends upon that culture remaining strong.

Darwin Community Arts Inc is the new name of Brown's Mart Community Arts Inc, adopted by the Association's Annual General Meeting in April 2008. The change in name officially represents the change in direction of the Association towards grassroots arts development, specifically working at the neighbourhood level, which was set out in the Reinvention Plan of 2007. The change in name also seeks to remove any confusion or ambiguity about what the Association is about: it is about community arts in the Darwin region, not about a heritage building (Brown's Mart) in the City.

Darwin Community Arts (DCA) is a non-profit, incorporated Association that focuses on community-based arts and cultural development. It was established in the early 1970s as an outreach project of the Trustees of Brown's Mart, and originally named Brown's Mart Community Arts Project -- then simply Brown's Mart Community Arts (BMCA) in 1979 -- to resource the arts in Darwin. It was the first multi-arts developmental organisation in the City. Since then the sector has changed. There are now a number of art-specific production companies and service organisations, many of which were spawned by the then-BMCA.

BMCA was synonymous in Darwin with two areas of work: firstly, a diverse range of productions and projects currently encompassing the Darwin Fringe Festival, A Fist Full of Films short film festival, the Bamboo Lounge which showcases new artists and partnerships, and projects developing arts within the multicultural, Indigenous and disabled communities; and secondly the actual Brown’s Mart theatre, a venue consisting of an intimate theatre and associated spaces used for performances, workshops, gallery showings and other purposes.

Throughout its existence, BMCA has lived with the tension of being both a service organisation and a production house. This tension is one reason for inconsistencies in stakeholder perceptions regarding the role of the organisation. Other issues contributing to a climate of vulnerability and uncertainty that have affected Brown's Mart historically were differences in understanding of the term “community arts”, confusion about the function of the venue and the reach of the organisation, structural changes to the sector, and the enormously diverse – perhaps disjointed – range of projects and audiences.

As part of the South Australian Living Artists (SALA) Festival held each year, the Our Mob exhibition features selections of artworks by South Australian Indigenous community artists from across the state. From the South Australian coasts, through the Flinders Ranges, South Australia's mid north, Riverland and the red desert sands of the state's far north.

Our Mob celebrates the diversity of South Australian Indigenous art in a variety of media with over 100 artists sharing their stories and showing the energy and spirit of contemporary Aboriginal traditions in painting, print, sculpture and carving.

Our Mob is held at Artspace in the Adelaide Festival Centre.

For the first time in 2008, Our Mob was held alongside Our Young Mob, an exhibition by South Australia's young Indigenous artists. Artworks may also be available for sale through this exhibition.

The SALA Festival is generally held in August.

Located in Darwin’s, Parap gallery precinct, Outstation provides a backdrop for a broad range of work, sourced from Australian Aboriginal art centres. The gallery exhibits high quality artwork from emerging and established Indigenous artists.

The Directors, Matt Ward and Ben Danks, established the gallery after many years of experience in the Indigenous art industry, working for and in conjunction with art centres, museums and Indigenous arts peak bodies. Drawing on the many years of experience in desert and top end art centres, Outstation provides advice to both private and corporate clients.

Outstation aims to raise the profile of artists represented, while maintaining and creating new opportunities for these artists to earn a livelihood from their practice.
