Indigenu is about art, families and the sharing of culture manifested through art exhibitions, cultural consultancy, online shop and painters live sessions. Indigenu is committed to supporting a community of artists and their families who reside in Adelaide but return to their homeland. Some of these relationships now exceed a decade and Tony, the director of the gallery is known and respected in their respective communities. He was instrumental in providing support to families that were forced to come to Adelaide from Yuendamu where there was conflict and has been a volunteer for the Spirit festival for a number of years.

A new and exciting feature of this year’s Our Mob exhibition is the inaugural Adelaide Festival Centre’s South Australian Indigenous Acquisitive Art Award. One work from Our Mob 2010 will be selected for the award, presenting the artist with $5000 prize money and the opportunity to raise their professional profile in a national context. The Adelaide Festival Centre will acquire the winning work, which will help to grow the Adelaide Festival Centre Indigenous Art Collection which was established in 2002.

Our Mob 2010 also includes an Artist-in-residence program from August 5-8 where a group of visiting Ngarrindjeri women will work in the Artspace Gallery during gallery hours, demonstrating their unique cultural weaving skills and sharing stories behind their works of art through demonstrations for students, teachers and the visiting public. This is a great opportunity for students and the community to meet Indigenous artists and see their processes in creating their work. Bookings are essential and can be made through the Artspace Gallery on (08) 8216 8850.

Wilcannia’s Indigenous community is laying claim to the first drive-through Aboriginal art gallery in the world.

The gallery idea comes from 37 mainly Barkindji men and women who are transforming a dusty town park in Wilcannia in western New South Wales. It will become Reconciliation Park, a green, welcoming space with picnic tables, a playground, barbecues and large-scale Aboriginal artworks by local artists. From the comfort of their cars, people will be able to enjoy the art, which will reflect what reconciliation means to the artists.

“There’s this misconception that Wilcannia is a bad place, so if we can get people to drive through and see how good it is, they’ll hopefully stay for a while and contribute to the local economy,” says Wilcannia Community Development Employment Project (CDEP) manager Trevor Johnstone.

Johnstone, a Nyampa man from nearby Menindee, says when the Central Darling Shire Council first told him it had funding to develop Reconciliation Park, he and local community members jumped at the idea of using the space to show local art.

Wilcannia CDEP participants started drafting plans for the drive-through gallery last year and consulted with the wider community, talking through issues with a few people who initially opposed the idea. Wiradjuri man Terry Doolan was one of the CDEP Participant Committee members who assisted and saw plans for the park progress through council. He says the group wanted to value-add to the town and put Aboriginal culture front and centre.

“Barkindji people want to see their Aboriginal culture on display – people will be able to see these big artworks from the hospital rooms across the road and tourists will see it when they drive through,” Doolan says. “Others in the community can get involved by contributing artworks that showcase reconciliation.

“We have now got wonderful dialogue and understanding with the council. We are delighted to have ownership of the park and to work on this from start to finish. It’s a two-and-a-half year process and we’re in it for the long haul.”

“I am so proud of the community’s efforts on this project and the positive outcomes,” Johnstone says. “These little communities have missed out for too long, and it’s all about changing that.”

As one of the few Australian Aboriginal owned and operated museum THE KEEPING PLACE "Black Fella's Dreaming" exhibits both traditional and contemporary artworks of Aboriginal art as well as housing a unique range of historical literature and artefacts (artifacts).

"I had a dream to keep my best paintings, then somehow I couldn't stand to sell other Black Fellas' paintings cheaply in my gallery and I tried to keep the best of their work and it turned into Black Fella's Dreaming Museum. The name is Black Fella's Dreaming = one Black fella, me. It was my dream." - Gordon Frederick Syron

It has been Gordon's dream to foster self-respect within the Aboriginal community; to create jobs, promote Aboriginal art and increase the awareness and fill in the large gaps of Australian h

Based in Wimbledon Village, London, Sarah-Jane Holden runs exhibitions of Australian Contemporary Aboriginal Art. The collection is probably the most comprehensive collection of paintings of Central and Western and Eastern Desert artists currently in the UK.

Aboriginal art is a firm favourite in British and in European Art collections, both public and private. The Sarah-Jane Holden Exhibitions in the UK are a viewing platform to see the huge variety, skill and talent among Aboriginal artists.

Contemporary graphics and design enable the art to fit seamlessly into today's modern interior, and the drama of a large scale painting can be achieved through a relatively modest outlay.

Provenance for artworks is guaranteed by way of a detailed Authenticity Certificate. These provide the purchaser with photographs of the artist working on the painting, information about the artist, awards, collections, and the story of the painting itself. The detail will depend on the cultural sensitivities surrounding a particular story.

The aboriginal paintings are prepared to a museum standard. They are painted on Belgian linen prepared with gesso and with two layers of undercoat. The artists use polymer acrylic paint.

Sarah-Jane works with two galleries in Austraila to promote Aboriginal paintings, Tingari Arts of Central Australia and Utopian Aboriginal Eastern Desert Art.
